SAND
During COVID, I discovered the gift of changing tides. I needed to be outside and the beaches in Maine provided me with an escape from isolation and fear. I was surprised and intrigued by the intricate patterns I saw in the sand as I walked in frigid temperatures. At low tide, I discovered hundreds of living and changing patterns in the sand. I was fascinated and excited to see the variation of nature’s designs each time I returned.
The movement of the waves create the water beneath the surface to circle around and around. Sand grains and rock are set down in a process. At each low tide the waves carve out grooves in the sand bed.
I photographed the variations of patterns and printed them. Some I further explored by enhancing them with pastels and colored pencils.
